The sheriff in Webb County praised the members of the local narcotics unit after a traffic stop led to the seizure of nearly 10 kilograms of a substance believed to be cocaine. Officers pulled over a vehicle on Loop 20 and discovered that a 41-year-old man was carrying roughly 2 ounces of the substance. Law enforcement did not provide details about the reason for the initial traffic stop.
An investigation into the man’s activities led the sheriff’s department to a home in south Laredo. A news release reported that the subsequent search of the property uncovered 9.7 kilograms of what they officers believed to be cocaine and $17,980 in cash. The vehicle involved in the original traffic stop was seized as well as a vehicle found at the residence.
According to authorities, the cocaine would have sold for $670,208 on the street. The sheriff’s department has shared information about the case with the Drug Enforcement Administration, which will continue to investigate the alleged drug trafficking.
When a person becomes involved in a drug investigation for large quantities of narcotics, harsh criminal penalties could result. The representation of a criminal defense lawyer may inform a person about strategies for responding to charges of drug crimes. A lawyer might question the legitimacy of a search and seizure in an effort to eliminate evidence from the case. A legal evaluation may give a person insights about the strength of a case and aid the choice between a trial and plea deal. During a trial or plea negotiation, a lawyer may be able to cast doubt on evidence and reduce the possibility of a felony conviction.
