Drugs are viewed as a major issue in Texas and throughout the nation. Law enforcement personnel are constantly seeking out those who are believed to be involved in drug trafficking or manufacturing. One investigation yielded indictments of 37 alleged members of the Texas Mexican Mafia .
Twenty-six of the members were arrested in one large sweep in late May. They joined eight others who had already been arrested and three who have been declared fugitives. According to the indictment, the organization was involved in distributing heroin and methamphetamine. In addition, the defendants allegedly demanded a 10 percent tax on those who distributed drugs but were not part of their network. Those who did not pay were confronted with violence.
Along with the drug charges, the defendants have been charged with gun crimes, conspiracy and other offenses. Those who are convicted for extortion conspiracy could be incarcerated in federal prison for as long as 20 years. For drug conspiracy or drug possession, the penalties range from five years to 40 years. With firearms charges, there can be an additional 10-year sentence.
Although these charges are serious and involve a multitude of allegations against accused drug dealers and gang members, they are still entitled to a strong defense and acquittal if the situation warrants it. Numerous factors are relevant with arrests of this magnitude. Law enforcement is required to have a search warrant and adhere to the defined protocol when investigating drug crimes. Having help from a legal professional is essential with drug charges and is the first call that those who have been arrested should make.
