What causes divorce

Divorce is a common occurrence in Texas and the rest of the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 22 percent of couples will undergo a marital disruption event within five years of getting married. For couples that have been married for at least 20 years, the odds of their marriages being disrupted by death, separation or divorce rises to 53 percent. There are several indicators that influence whether a marriage will last.

An unfaithful spouse is one of the main reasons divorce occurs. Both physical and emotional affairs can end a marriage. This can include a one-time occurrence as well as multiple affairs.

Money difficulties are another issue that may push couples to seek a divorce. Spouses may have contradictory views regarding how money should be saved and spent. Some couples are unable to make their marriages work when the wife brings home more money than the husband does.

Addiction also is reported as a cause of divorce. Spouses who are addicted to sex, drugs or alcohol may make those vices their first priority at the expense of their partners and families. Individuals who are unable to cope with the ramifications of a spouse that is in the under the control of an addition may opt to leave the marriage.

Some people discover that they are not compatible with their spouses. This may be evident before the marriage or may be a result of individuals changing over time.

A family law attorney may be able to recommend to his or her clients whether mediation or litigation is the best route to take for a divorce. Mediation may be suggested for clients that want to avoid significant emotional distress. Litigation may be necessary for highly contested issues.
