Company designs patch that can detect alcohol intoxication

As one of the most populous states in the nation, Texas has a high number of traffic accidents, and a substantial proportion of those are caused by drunk drivers. Although a wide variety of legislative and social solutions to this problem are in place, there is now a product that may be able to prevent DUIs through chemistry.

A company located in the neighboring state of New Mexico has developed a patch that, when applied to skin, senses alcohol in the bloodstream of the recipient. This patch is meant to curb drunk driving and encourage designated drivers to observe their responsibility to stay sober. The product is intended to be marketed to a wide variety of businesses.

For example, the company suggests that bars or other alcohol vending establishments might purchase detector patches emblazoned with their brand logo. The patches could then be given to the designated drivers, allowing them to prove their suitability for the task and letting the establishment verify their eligibility to drive. Although the patch has yet to be mass manufactured, the company is exploring options for funding and distribution.

A conviction on drunk driving charges can result in severe penalties. These can include incarceration, heavy fines and a driver's license suspension. In addition, those who are convicted may have trouble finding jobs or pursuing educational opportunities. As a result, people who have been issued such charges may want to meet with a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible so that a strategy to combat the allegations can be discussed and developed.
