During divorce proceedings, it is common for the higher-earning spouse to provide alimony payments to the other. This is known as temporary alimony and generally ends at the completion of the divorce. For alimony to continue after the divorce, the marriage must have lasted at least 10 years, and the receiving spouse must demonstrate that he or she needs the support. The maximum amount of post-divorce spousal maintenance allowed by the law is $2,500 per month for three years.
